Climate Footprint: Everything you need to know

Understanding what a climate footprint is can be hard, so we’ve made it easy.

Climate footprints show the greenhouse gases that are given out during the process of getting our products into your hands. While many people call this measurement a ‘carbon footprint’, carbon is not the most prevalent gas in food production therefore, we call it our ‘climate footprint’.

Our climate footprint is a combination of greenhouse gases like:

Carbon Dioxide CO2

Nitrogen Oxide N02

Methane CH4

Carbon dioxide accounts for three-quarters of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, however, so we convert the other gases’ effects into a CO2 equivalent number to make measuring it easier.

The vast majority of humanity’s greenhouses gases come from fossil fuel combustion, but the food we eat is still responsible for almost one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions.

This is where Strong Roots come in.

Our climate footprint takes centre stage on our packaging, so you know what emissions have been generated by our products throughout the entire process of getting them from soil to shelf.

When you see 0.80 on the packaging of your Crispy Skinny Fries, for example, this is our best estimate of the greenhouse gases generated in the process of bringing them to you, so you know the environmental impact of the food that you eat*.

Our climate footprint includes things like:

our climate footprint

• Raw ingredients (their growth, irrigation and harvesting)

• Production (peeling, cooking, freezing)

• Storage (keeping our food cold on its way to you)

• Transport (moving our products around in refrigerated trucks)

• Packaging (creating the packaging needed to keep our food safe and delicious)

A typical climate footprint for one of our products looks likes this:

Thanks to all our hard work with the help of our partners CarbonCloud, you can see how Strong Roots compare to thousands of other products, from raw ingredients to other frozen foods. We believe it’s important for you to have this information so that you can make conscious choices that are better for you and better for the planet.

In the meantime, we are always working to improve our own practices and bring the numbers you see on our packs down even further!*

Good for you. Good for the planet. Good made easy.
